Key points about usability which may challenge your intuitive beliefs:

There are no Users. There are people who want to accomplish a goal.
Using your product is not the goal of your customer.
Your Product is an obstacle between your Customer and his/her Goal!
Usability applies to hardware, software, and information.

Product is an Obstacle between the Customer and the Goal.

A manual is an attempt to install functionality in the customer that is missing from the product. You can see how far the external reference takes the customer away from the goal. Customer gets angry with product.

Usability in the Product keeps the Customer focused on the Goal. Customer accomplishes goal without interruption, and is happy.
